This information page is an on going
project.
Below you will find a list of all Islander boats, years and
productions. Links to specification pages are still in the
building, and will be updated as time and information permits.
The
First Islander started out as Joseph McGlasson boat Company, then
1961 to 1962 islanders were built by Joseph McGlasson and Glass
Laminates, they split up in 1962 and Glass Laminates went on to build
Colombia boats. Columbia's were cheaper to build with thinner
fiberglass hulls and had a much lower selling price. By 1963, the
McGlasson Sailboat Co. was incorporated as the Wayfarer Yacht Corp.
with McGlasson as principal owner and designer. Wayfarer was bought by
a Ralph Brown sometime in the mid 1960's. And in 1967 we start seeing
the name Islander Yachts with the white "swoosh" sail in the black
rectangle for a logo. In 1968 Wayfarer sold Islander Yachts to
Cosmodyne, Inc. A relationship that lasted only three years. In
1971,Cosmodyne sold Islander yachts to Radlon Inc. Islander under
Radlon Inc. sold kit boats under the name of Yachtcraft. Ed Carter, an
owner of a Yachtcraft Islander 37, says; the kit boats were generally
discontinued models, constructed in the same place that current models
were constructed and by the same workers. The Islander 36 replaced the
Islander 37. early 1970's, Tradewinds Marine, also of Costa Mesa bought
the molds for Bruce King's design of the Islander 55. Islander 48
supposedly began life as an east coast built Mariner 47. Then there is
a person who owns what looks like an Islander 32, has I32
specifications, and his boat came with Islander 32 manual. but his
title has " Iona" and the hull number is not an Islander hull number.
Islander Yachts Inc. closed its doors in March 1986. While
it was the
end to the Islander Yachts Inc. It was not the end of the
Islander
sailboat or its story. If you often walk along
the docks and look a
sailboats you will see, boats with the planked design on the hull and
the arrow that runs just below the gunnels from the stern to the
bow.
These are Islander Hulls. Although not built by
Islander. There are
and untold number of Islander hull designs being used by small
boat
builders the world over. As Islander Yachts Inc. was closing down
they
sold many of their hull molds. This practice also took
place several
times over the course of the building of Islander boats going
back as
far as the original company started by Mc Glasson back in the 50's. As,
new designs came out the old hull design and the mold itself was often
sold to other companies.. In fact several times of
the years
Columbia had bought the old design from Islander as new design came out.
To my surprise. These old mold have been used and sold again and
again
by different small sailboat builders and you will find then to this day
being used by small boat builders the world over.
While the top half
and the interior is changed the engine's often different. There
are
many boats running around with the old Islander hulls designed
by Mc
Glasson, Perry, Lapworths and a few other well known Naval
Architect
like Robert King. These boat have different serial numbers,
and no
longer support the Islander Swoosh Logo. Many of these boats were
often built out of inferior glass and products.. But, the
Islander
Hull and Islander Hull designs live on and have been used by many of
the other big boys of the sailboat Industry.
